Snow beetle

December 21, 2330

Today we take a break from historical citations to pay homage to a beloved winter carol, on the 200th anniversary of its original debut.

Flight of the Snow Beetle

One crisp and chilly winter’s night
Two men stood looking quite contrite.
Between them both a message gleamed
Lit by moonlight's chilly beam.

“That’s why she had us round them up,”
Said captain bold. “So she can sup
On something rare and quite distinct.
When these are gone, they’ll be extinct.”

And all around the beetles flew
Snowy white and crystal blue
Swarming round those travelers two
Beetles in the air.

Up jumped captain with a cry:
“We’ll ne’er give in. Let’s to the skies!”
His loyal colleague took the helm,
And up they shot to Heaven’s realm.

They flew o’er hill and o’er dale,
Through wind and snow and slush and hail.
And with their own most skillful hands
Placed beetle pairs throughout the lands.

And though those lovely coleoptera
Can never thank that dashing pair-a
It’s due to them that they’re alive
Liberated, left to thrive.

And all around the beetles fly
White and blue up in the sky
Free to soar both low and high
Beetles in the air
.

Other mentions: Phlox fed these to his Pyrithian bat in 2153 (ENT).
